Ethereal Gothic experimental, alternative pop

Comparisons:

Big Hat, The Sundays

Covers/own material:

Own

General comments:

The band has a folky pop acoustic sound, while Traci Németh has a high, slightly babyish (somewhat like Harriet Wheeler of The Sundays), but powerful voice capable of whispering and belting out a song when appropriate. They remind me a lot of Big Hat in their overall sound and the way their songs move from the dramatic to the pop-y. (Neile)

Comments:

The overall sound of this album is great—I loved the acoustic sound with Traci Németh's vocals, but it grew slowly on me and I almost didn't give it the time to. Luckily there are a couple of tracks that are utterly repeatable: "Just Like You" and "Lunar Bells"; they're so wonderful they keep you playing the album so the other tracks have time to make their impression. I can't make out the lyrics, but I love the sound of Traci Németh's swooping sometimes pouty voice. (Neile)

Cellar Door Serenades

Release info:

2002—self-released

Availability:

U.S. places that carry indie releases

Ecto priority:

Recommended for experimental pop fans

Group members:

Traci Németh—vocals, flute
Krystof Németh—stringed instruments, vocals
markus Kamp—percussion, programming, keyboards, vocals

Comments:

This varies a little more in style than Deadly Faerie Tales (there's a cabaret-style song) but mostly this is more of their their soaring acoustic pop. Again, it took a few listens for it to come in focus, but this was definitely one of those discs that the more I listened to it the more I liked it, the more the songs stuck in my head. (Neile)
