Drop The Box
Country of origin:
Type of music generally:
Traditional folk-flavoured folk and folk/rock
Most recent release, loveday, 2001
Very much like Spirit of the West
Own songs and traditional reels and jigs
I'm amazed at how much this Scottish band sounds like Spirit of the West, which is from Vancouver, B.C. They have the same take on traditional jigs and reels and write their own traditional-sounding songs. Now this isn't usually my cup of tea, but early Spirit of the West I adore, and I really like this group's sound, too. The songs are lively and gentle. The male main singer's voice has a lovely Scottish burr and there are gentle female background vocals and she does a little lead singing, too. Gently charming, though of course many of the songs really folkrock.

Drop The Box is the only one we've heard
1995—Lockshore, KRL, 9 Watt Road, Hillington, Glasgow G52 4RY, U.K.—CDLCL 1234
In the U.K. and I've seen it various places in the U.S.
Highly recommended for fans of trad-based folk/rock
Michael Ferrie—fiddle, mandolin, viola
Leo McCann-button accordion
This a really delightful mix of traditional jigs and reel and new songs that are a mix of charming lover songs and some lively almost drinking songs. Whenever I put this on it wins me over. (Neile)
