By day, I'm a graduate student in Psychology at the University of Toronto. By night, I'm usually still a graduate student but sometimes I manage to get to some good concerts... I've been on ecto for about 4 or 5 years now, having discovered it while I was a member of RDT waaaaaay back while I was living in Kingston, ON.
Ecto opened up whole new worlds of music to me and I developed quite a taste for the female singer-songwriter genre. Suddenly I found myself travelling great distances to see artists I'd barely heard of, one of whom was Jewel, who thanks to the posts of a couple of variations of "Neal/Neile" and also a few varieties of "Jeff". :-)
In a wierd coincidence it was at one of Jewel's shows ("Jewelstock") that I happened to meet Happy and Kevin, which was a big thrill, although it would have been nicer to see Happy actually perform.
Anyway, I later moved to Toronto and discovered there a wealth of local talent, much of it independent and largely unknown. In particular, two of the artists I found, Sarah Slean and Emm Gryner, seemed to shine more brightly than the others. But they were both still independent and largely unknown, even in Toronto, and both were almost completely nonexistent on the internet. To me this seemed criminal, so along with my friend Gian Covello I decided to champion their cause on the internet by setting up websites for each of them. And thus Northern Sounds was born.
A year and a half, and several URL changes later, both Sarah Slean's and Emm Gryner's websites are still going strong, albeit overdue for a facelift.
