doug dmw@mwmw.com Hi, I'm doug, long-term Washington DC resident, often known as "mr. pathetic" because I'm the proprietor of the pathetic caverns, a media criticism/review site in which I indulge my passions for modern literature, superior film-making, good genre fiction, and trashy movies, as well as writing about a lot of music both within and without the great ectophilic umbrella. It was in 1995 or so that I figured out that somebody had made up a genre that included music I'd loved for years, like that of Suzanne Vega, Jane Siberry and Kate Bush, and called it "ectophilic." I'm a musical gourmand, style-wise, but a bit of a lyric snob; I find words that strike me as dumb hard to forgive or overlook. My top ecto picks tend to be unsettling or uneasy, either in a musical or lyrical dimension--often both. Veda Hille slays me, and I love contrasts, like Heavenly's sunny melodies, crunchy guitars, and frequently mordant lyrics--ditto for the Nields. One of my favorite recent discoveries in the ecto realm is Iva Bittova. I also listen to lots of (often female-fronted) punk and post-punk indie rock, like Rainer Maria and a host of local bands that I see in clubs around town. I also write reviews and feature articles for a number of publications, including Snap-Pop and Tape-Op (nice little internal rhyme, don't you think?), engineer and assist live and recorded music on a semi-professional basis, and play guitar, bass and/or sing in several dc-area bands. As a day job I sling web and multi-media code, these days on a freelance basis.
