Marion Kippers

I guess I've always been an Ectophile in that I've always had a preference for female voices.

I began to really listen to music in the mid-1970s when ABBA was my favourite band, planting the seed for my love for melody and harmonies in music. I discovered Kate Bush in 1978 when The Kick Inside was released and that has been my all-time favourite album ever since--it's the album I grew up with. I still love Kate's music, though I don't listen to her nowadays as much as I used to do. My favourite Kate albums apart from her debut would be Hounds of Love and The Sensual World. I never quite got into The Dreaming though I still wonder why as think it's great each time I listen to it, and I never got into The Red Shoes which I hardly ever listen to.

In the early 1980s I went through a short New Wave period. While I hardly ever listen to anything from that era anymore, that was also the period that I fell in love with the music of the Cocteau Twins, who did remain as one of my favourite bands to this day.

And then I heard Suzanne Vega in 1985. Discovering her music changed my musical world and I delved into the music of the female singer-songwriters with a distinctive style, leading me to current favourites like Tori Amos, Loreena McKennitt, and Sarah McLachlan, to name but a few. And Happy Rhodes of course, who has quickly become my favourite singer. I love just about every album of hers, with currently ranking Many Worlds Are Born Tonight and the collections RhodeSongs and The Keep as my most favourites and perhaps Rearmament and Ecto as my least favourites, but that's only in comparison.

Overall I would say I love melodic music with a beautiful female voice and nice harmonies, often on the quieter side of the Ecto musical spectrum. If I had to name categories: ethereal, evocative, folk/rock, some pop, and traditional/world music (Celtic, Scandinavian). In general I don't like loud music, standard boys/girls-with-guitars, rap, house or heavy metal, though of course there are always exceptions to every rule. I hope my comments in The Guide are helpful for you.
